A killer is hiding in Plain sight…
The hunt for a serial killer leads Homicide Detective Josiah Troyer back to his Amish roots. To catch a madman preying on young women, Joe must return to Lancaster County and regain the trust of a shattered community.
The FBI knows Joe is the best chance they have of solving this case. By returning to Lancaster, he will face shunning, and resentment from the people he once called family and friends.
Hannah’s heart was broken when Josiah abandoned her eight-years ago to live with the Englishers. Forced to wed a man not of her choosing, her husband’s untimely death has left her struggling to put her life back together.
When unspeakable tragedy strikes again, Josiah unexpectedly returns, investigating the murder of her sister and two other young Amish women. Hannah quickly discovers the man that’s come back is not the same one she fell in love with.
Gone are Josiah’s easy smiles and gentle ways. He’s harder, colder—a true Englisher… But not even shunning can stop the attraction from consuming them both, and Josiah soon opens Hannah’s eyes to a world of passion and pleasure she never imagined. Choosing Josiah would mean walking away from the only world she’s ever known.
Josiah’s investigation begins to unravel when he discovers the killer is closer than he thought. Soon, he’s in a race against time to save the only woman he’s ever loved before she becomes the next victim.
When Joe read Eli two bedtime stories, and Hannah still had not come up to tell him goodnight, he grew concerned. Something was wrong. He’d sensed it the moment he entered the house. Rashly, he’d assumed she was still sore about their argument earlier, but there was something else bothering her.
Closing the book, he set it on the nightstand. Eli made no move to untuck himself from Joe’s side and were it not for the desire to spend a little more grown-up time with his mother, Joe would have been content to stay there until the boy fell asleep. When he made a move to get up, Eli hugged him tighter and buried his face against Joe’s chest. “Don’t go…”
“What’s the matter, buddy? Are you scared you’re going to have more bad dreams? Dexter is going to be here with you all night.”
“I was scared ya weren’t comin’ back,” he sniffled.
“Oh, hey now…” Joe hugged him tighter and ruffled his hand through the boy’s silky mop of hair. “Grown-ups argue sometimes, they have disagreements, but I will always come back, Eli. You and your ma mean everything to me.”
“My da loved us and he didn’t come back. He died…”
“I know he did. And I’m sorry you had to go through that.”
“Auntie Cassie loved us, and she died too.”
“I know…but I wasn’t here then, and I am now. I’m going to make sure nothing happens to you or your ma.”
“Who’s gonna keep you safe?”
“Nobody. I’m a police officer. That’s my job.”
Eli considered his response a moment and then nodded as if it made sense.
“I’m going to go check on your ma, okay? See what’s keeping her.”
Eli snuggled into his pillow as Joe stood and tucked the covers up around the boy’s neck. “Night, buddy… Remember, no bad dreams.”
Joe paused on his way out to give the dog a friendly pat, then gently pulled the door closed behind him. He headed downstairs to look for Hannah and was surprised to find her sitting at the kitchen table, light from the full moon illuminating her silhouette. “Hannah? What are you doing sitting here in the dark? Eli’s waiting for you…”
He lit the gas lamp on the counter and dread fisted in his gut when he saw her eyes brimming with tears. Sitting in front of Hannah was her sister’s diary.
“You lied to me, Josiah.”
