Lainey Stratton does not fall in love with strangers she meets on vacation. It simply doesn’t make logical sense. So when Lainey meets Carter Thompson on the first day of her Caribbean vacation, she knows it could never amount to anything more than a crush. At the end of the vacation she will return to Dallas and he will return to D.C., and that will be the end of it. Well, unless he wants to join her at a friend’s destination wedding, which would be considered vacation too, right?
But when an unexpected tragedy sends Lainey’s logical world spiraling out of control, she realizes her vacation crush might be the only one who can help her pick up the pieces of her shattered life. That is, as long as she can get out of the way of her own happiness. And as long as Carter’s past doesn’t catch up with him before she gets a chance.
Character Interview with Lainey on Location in Dallas
Hi y’all. Today we are in Dallas, Texas chatting with the heroine from Happily Ever Afters, Lainey Stratton.
Hi Lainey. Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hi! I’m an internal medicine doctor. I finished my residency last year and am working at a hospital in Dallas. I like sports, especially hockey, and I love spending time with my friends.
You recently went on a trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico with your friends. Tell us about it.
Yes. My best friend, Reece, and sister, Kara, planned the trip to celebrate my thirtieth birthday. San Juan is amazing. The locals are so hospitable, the water is crystal-clear, and there’s a ton to explore. The trip turned out a little different than I expected, and as someone who has a list and plan for everything, it always takes me a little while to adjust to change. It’s something I’m working on, but old habits die hard.
You actually deal with a lot of change in this story. How did you manage that fear of change during this particularly rocky time in your life?
I think you will see I didn’t always do it gracefully. A lot of times, life doesn’t ask if you want to change. It just does, and you have to keep up with it. But there are two big things that helped me. The first is my best friend, Reece, who always has my back. The second is my own inner strength. I found I possessed a lot more of it than I thought I did, though at times Reece and Carter had to remind me it was there.
If your life had a theme song, what would it be?
For this period in my life, I would have to say “Hold On” by Wilson Phillips. Rainbows come after storms, but sometimes you have to hold on through the rough parts.
What is your favorite thing about living in Dallas?
There are so many things I like about Dallas, it’s hard to narrow it down to just one. I guess maybe what I love most is all there is to do. You can get lost in museums, catch a professional sport’s game or explore the outdoors. Sometimes all in the same day! There’s no reason to ever be bored in Dallas.
Before you go, tell us one fun fact about yourself, something you don’t tell us in the book.
I love to go running. My favorite place to run is outdoors, but my busy schedule at the hospital keeps me from getting out as much as I would like. I’ve learned to like the treadmill. To date, I have run in six half marathon races and am training for my seventh.
Rachel Magee wrote her first novel when she was twelve and entered it into a contest for young author/illustrators. Unfortunately, the judges weren’t impressed with her stick figures. So she dropped the dream of becoming a world famous illustrator and stuck to spinning stories. When she’s not busy working on her latest book, she loves to travel with her family and friends. By far, her favorite destination is the beach, which tends to work its way into most of her stories. Between vacations, you can find her at home in The Woodlands, TX with her wonderful husband, their two adventurous kids and a couple of spirited pets, all of whom share Rachel’s love of the ocean. Well, except the cat and dog. They’re both afraid of water. Find out more about what Rachel has been up to at rachelmageebooks.com.
